Single Speed bikes are bikes that have only one gear and a free-wheel mechanism

Fixed-gear bikes (often called "fixes") are bikes that have a single gear that is attached ("fixed") directly to the hub of the bike's rear wheel.  That means that when the wheels are turning, so are the pedals, since the chain is driven by the sprocket mounted directly on the wheel. Usually fixies can be converted to single speed bikes by flipping the rear wheel and using the free-wheel sprocket
